The one thing blinds do that a shade cannot
A blind is a set of slats linked by a ladder cord and a lift mechanism. Tilt the slats and the light changes without the window disappearing. Raise them and the opening is clear. That double control is why blinds outlive every design trend: they are the only product that lets you keep the view and turn the sun down at the same time.
A shade is a single sheet of fabric. It goes up or it goes down, and in between you trade view for light in a straight line. Neither one is better; they answer different rooms. If what you want is a soft look and a clean window, you are probably after shades. If you want to sit at a desk at four in the afternoon and still see the street, you want blinds.

In Miami, humidity decides this more often than taste
Real wood is a natural material and it moves with the air around it. In a bathroom, a laundry room, a kitchen with a lot of cooking, or a window that opens onto a terrace, the slats swell, bow and stop hanging straight. It is not a defect and no warranty covers it: it is wood behaving like wood in a subtropical climate.
So the honest recommendation for a Miami home is a split one. Faux wood or aluminum wherever the humidity reaches, real wood in the dry interior rooms where it earns its place. A ground floor near the water and a fifteenth-floor bedroom are two different problems, and we quote them as two different products rather than pretending one material solves the house.
Vertical blinds, and when they still make sense
Verticals carry the reputation of a 1990s office and they half deserve it. But on a wide sliding door they still do something nothing else does: they stack to one side so the door actually opens, they tilt for light like any other blind, and if a vane gets damaged you replace that vane instead of the whole treatment.
In a rental unit, an office or a second home you do not visit often, that repairability is the entire argument. If you want the same operation with a better finish, ask us about sheer verticals or a sliding panel system when we come to measure, and we will bring samples of both.

Faux wood anywhere humidity reaches: bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, ground floors and windows next to an open terrace. Real wood warps and swells in those conditions and no warranty covers it. In dry interior rooms real wood looks better and weighs less at the same size, which matters on a wide window.
What is the difference between blinds and shades?
A blind has slats you can tilt, so you can change the light without losing the view. A shade is a single piece of fabric that only goes up or down. Blinds win where you want to keep looking out; shades win where you want a cleaner look or a fully darkened room.
Do vertical blinds still make sense on a sliding door?
Yes, and it is still the cheapest way to cover a wide slider properly. They stack to one side so the door works, they tilt for light, and a damaged vane is replaced one vane at a time. On a door you use every day, that repairability is worth more than the look.
Will blinds pass my condo’s window covering rules?
Almost always. Most buildings require the street-facing side to read white or off-white, and Florida law lets the board enforce it (Fla. Stat. §718.113(5)(c)). White or off-white slats satisfy nearly every building scheme. We still ask your association for its rules before we order.
