A motor is not a gadget. It is what makes a tall window usable
The shades people stop using are always the same ones: the ten-foot pane in the living room, the one behind the sofa or the bathtub, and the six in a row that mean six trips across the room. A motor removes the reason not to use them, which is the entire point. A shade that stays down all day is an expensive way to block a view you paid for.
The lift is cordless either way. On a motorized shade there is nothing to pull at all: a button, a wall switch, or a schedule that moves it while you are at the office.
Battery or hardwired, and how we decide
This is the first fork in the road and it is settled at the measurement, not at the quote. It depends on whether there is power at the head of the window, and on how big the shade is.
| Battery | Hardwired | |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical work | None | Needs an electrician and access to the head of the window |
| Best for | Retrofits, condos, finished walls, one or two rooms | New construction, renovations, whole-home installs |
| Very wide or very tall shades | Limited | The right answer, every time |
| Maintenance | Recharge the battery, or add a solar charging panel and forget about it | None |
| What we usually tell you | If the walls are already closed and you are not renovating, go battery | If you are already in construction, wire everything, including the drapery track. Pulling wire afterwards is the expensive part, not the motor |
Why Somfy, and only Somfy
Somfy is what we install and what we come back to service. It is the motor most of the buildings we work in already have, parts are available in Miami, and a remote you buy today still talks to a shade that went up years ago. That matters more than it sounds: motorization is the one part of a window treatment that has to keep working long after the fabric has stopped being a decision.
Remote, wall switch, app and timed schedules. Multi-channel remotes, so one button moves a whole room or a whole floor. Quiet enough to sit in a bedroom without waking anyone.
Almost anything on a tube or a track
The motor changes the hardware, not the product. Pick the treatment first and then decide whether it moves by hand or by button.

Roller, blackout and dual shades
The most motorized product of the lot, and where the motor earns its keep fastest: tall glass, west light, and rooms nobody wants to cross twice a day.
Blackout shades →
Cellular shades
Including top-down bottom-up, so daylight comes in over the top without the street coming in with it. On a motor, both rails move on their own.
Solar and cellular →
Roman shades
The fabric look with none of the pulling. Worth motorizing on anything above head height, where a Roman is heaviest to lift by hand.
Roman shades →
Drapery tracks
A fourteen-foot lined panel is heavy. Two months in, nobody opens it by hand any more. A motorized track is the fix, and it is silent.
Custom draperies →
Zebra and dual rollers
Two fabrics on one tube, and a motor that lands the bands exactly where you want them instead of near enough.
Roller shades →
Sheer verticals and sliding panels
For wide openings and terrace doors, where the panel has to travel a long way and hand-operating it means walking the whole run.
Blinds →Five steps, and only one of them is yours
- We measure, and we look for power
Mount type, depth, obstructions, and whether there is a live wire at the head of the window. That last one decides battery or hardwired far more often than the budget does.
- The motor is decided before we order
It sits inside the roller tube, so it is not something to bolt on later. If motorization is still a maybe, we quote the shade both ways so you are comparing, not guessing.
- Production, with the lead time in writing
Fabric, tube, motor and hardware are made to your measurement. The lead time goes on the quote, so you are not calling us to ask where it is.
- Our own team installs
The same people who measured. In a condo we deal with the management office over the freight elevator slot and the paperwork the building asks for.
- We set the schedules with you
On install day, on your own phone, around your own routine. Most people leave with two or three schedules and never open the app again, which is exactly how it should work.
The schedule that actually matters in Miami
The useful setting is not “open at eight”. It is closing the west-facing shades at two in the afternoon, before the room heats up, and opening them again at seven when the glare is gone. Cooling a room that already got hot costs more than not letting it heat up in the first place, and in Miami the west elevation heats up every single day of the year.
In a second home or a rental the schedules do a second job. They make an empty apartment look lived in, and they keep the afternoon sun off the furniture and the floors while nobody is there to lower anything.
Romina’s team is fast, efficient, and uses prime quality somfy shades. I have hired her for residential and commercial projects and she never disappoints.
Frequently asked questions
Can you motorize the shades I already have?
Sometimes. It depends on the tube diameter and the brackets on what is already up, so we need to see them. In a lot of cases replacing the shade costs less than adapting it, and we tell you which case you are in before you spend anything.
Battery or hardwired?
Battery if your walls are already closed, which covers most condos and most retrofits. Hardwired if you are building or renovating, or if the shades are very large. Battery motors need recharging, and a solar charging panel removes even that.
Can I control them from my phone?
Yes, with a Somfy hub, which is also what enables schedules and voice control. Without the hub you still get the remote and the wall switch, and for a lot of people that is the whole requirement.
Are they loud?
Quiet enough for a bedroom. We will run a motor on a sample in front of you before you order one, which settles the question better than any description.
Can I motorize one room now and the rest later?
Yes. The remotes are multi-channel, so a shade added next year joins the same remote and the same app. What cannot wait is the decision on each individual shade, because the motor lives inside its tube.
Do you work in condo buildings?
Most of our work is in buildings. We ask your association for its window covering rules before ordering and we coordinate the install with the management office.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. Every project runs through Romina, in English or in Spanish, from the first measurement to the day we set your schedules.
