What a shutter does that no shade does
It is permanent. A shutter is a frame and a set of panels built to the exact hole in your wall. It stays with the property, it reads as architecture rather than as decoration, and there is no fabric to fade and replace in six years.
It gives privacy without closing the air. The louvers tilt with the window wide open, which is the whole point of a Miami January and February, when you actually want the windows open.
It follows any shape. Arches, angles, corner windows and bays are built to the exact geometry of the opening. A shade cannot follow a curve. A shutter can, and on a specialty window it is usually the only real answer.
It slows the heat. The panel plus the air gap between shutter and glass puts two barriers where there was one, and on a west-facing wall you feel it in the afternoon.
It cleans with a cloth. That is the entire maintenance routine, which is not something you can say about a fabric treatment in a house with pets.
Composite or hardwood
The two materials look almost identical once painted white. The difference shows up in a bathroom, and in how wide a single panel can go.

Louver size, and what it changes
This is the decision people regret most often, because it is the one that changes how the room looks from the inside. It is also the easiest to get right if you hold a sample up in the opening, which is what we bring to the measurement.

What shutters are not
They are not hurricane protection. An interior plantation shutter is a window covering, not an impact product, and there is no storm rating for one. In Miami-Dade, storm protection means impact windows and doors, exterior shutters and storm panels with their Notices of Acceptance, and the county’s permit rules cover the opening itself, never what you hang inside it. If what you need is storm protection, that is a different trade and we will tell you so instead of selling you a shutter.
What we do know is how to work alongside impact glass. Impact frames are deeper than standard ones, and that changes both the mount type and the depth available for an inside-mount shutter. We measure for it. It is the detail that most often turns into a panel that will not close, and it is why we measure the opening ourselves rather than working from numbers someone sends us.

Frequently asked questions
Are plantation shutters hurricane rated?
No. Interior plantation shutters are a window covering, not a storm product, and no hurricane rating exists for them. Storm protection in Miami-Dade means impact windows and doors, exterior shutters or storm panels, which the county permits separately. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something that does not exist.
Composite or wood shutters in Florida?
Composite anywhere humidity reaches: bathrooms, kitchens, ground floors and windows near an open terrace, because composite will not warp or swell. Hardwood in dry interior rooms, when you want a stained finish, a real grain, or a panel wider than composite can carry.
Which louver size should I choose?
On a standard bedroom window, 3 1/2 inch louvers are almost always right. On a nine-foot floor-to-ceiling opening, go to 4 1/2 inch or the panel will read as a fence. Below that, 2 1/2 inch suits small windows and traditional interiors. We bring samples and hold them in your opening before you decide.
Can you make shutters for arched or angled windows?
Yes. Arches, angles, corner windows and bays are built to the exact geometry of the opening. It is one of the few things a shutter does that no shade can do at all, and it is usually why a specialty window ends up with shutters.
Do shutters work on a sliding glass door?
Yes, with a bypass or bifold system, so the panels slide or fold aside and the door still works. It is a different frame from a window shutter and it has to be measured with the door track in front of us, not from a drawing.
