WHAT IT IS

A Roman shade is drapery that behaves like a shade

It is a single piece of fabric that folds up on itself as it rises and hangs flat when it is down. So you get the texture, the pattern and the softness of a curtain on a window that is too small, too high or too awkward for panels, and you get it without anything reaching the floor.

Everything about it is a decision: the fold, the fabric, the lining and whether it mounts inside the frame or over it. That is the whole point of making it to measure, and it is what we walk through at the measurement rather than after the order.

The three fold styles

The fold is what people are really choosing when they say they want a Roman shade. Flat uses the least fabric and reads the most contemporary; hobbled uses the most and reads the most decorative.

Where a Roman shade is the right answer, and where it is not

Where it works. Windows you want to read as fabric and not as a mechanism. Kitchens and breakfast nooks, where a floor-length curtain is always in the way. Windows above a sofa or a console, where a panel would land on the cushions. Bedrooms, with a blackout lining, because an east-facing bedroom in Miami has full sun before seven in the morning for most of the year. And layered behind sheers, when you want softness and darkness on the same window.

Where it is not. Sliding doors and anything you open several times a day: the fabric stacks at the top of the opening and gets in the way of a door. There the answer is drapery on a track that stacks off the glass, or a roller shade. We will tell you that at the measurement, even when the Roman is the one you came in asking for.

Fabric, lining and lift

Fabric. Linens and linen blends, cottons, textured weaves and prints, and performance fabrics for the rooms that take real sun. We bring the books to your window, because a swatch under a showroom light and the same swatch under Miami afternoon light are two different colours.

Lining. Unlined to diffuse the light, privacy lining for daytime, blackout lining for bedrooms and media rooms. A blackout lining stops the light through the fabric, not the light around it, so for a genuinely dark bedroom we mount outside the frame with a generous overlap or pair the Roman with a blackout roller shade behind it.

Lift. Manual as standard, or Somfy motorization, which is worth it on anything high, wide or behind furniture. It has to be decided before we order, because the hardware is different. More on the motorized shades page.

Roman shades in a condo

Florida law lets your association enforce a unified exterior appearance (Fla. Stat. §718.113(5)(c)), so most buildings expect the street-facing side to read white or off-white. On a Roman shade that is solved with a white liner: the fabric you chose stays on the inside and the building gets the uniformity it asks for.

We ask your building for its window covering rules before ordering and hand you the specification sheet in the format your board asks for. Most of what we have installed in Miami since 2011 has been in buildings, so this is a routine step and not a complication.

Really fast quotes, great recommendations on what fabric and type of shade to place at each room, amazing service and very competitive prices! 100% recommended!!!

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do Roman shades block light completely?

Only with a blackout lining, and even then some light comes in around the edges unless the shade is mounted outside the window frame. For a fully dark bedroom we mount outside the frame with a blackout liner, or we put a blackout roller shade behind the Roman.

Which fold should I choose?

Flat fold for modern rooms and for fabric with a pattern you want to see flat. Relaxed for kitchens and casual interiors. Hobbled when you want the fabric volume visible even with the shade down. Flat takes the least fabric, hobbled the most, and relaxed sits in between.

Can a Roman shade be motorized?

Yes, with Somfy. It has to be decided before we order because the hardware is different, so if it is a maybe we quote both versions. It is the option we recommend most on high windows and on anything behind a sofa.

How wide can a single Roman shade be?

Past a certain width the fabric gets heavy and the folds stop sitting evenly, so a wide opening is better as two shades on a shared headrail, which reads intentional rather than improvised. We confirm the limit for your fabric when we measure.

Can the Roman shades match the curtains in the same room?

Yes, and it is a common request: the same fabric on the Roman and on the panels, or the Roman in the face fabric with the curtains in a plain that picks up one color from it. We plan the whole room at the measurement rather than window by window.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Every conversation about your windows can happen in Spanish, from the first message to the warranty.
